The Centaur's Well

For those of you reading who knew me while I was attending Hogwarts, you’ll remember that the Forbidden Forest had always been a fascination of mine. Well, now that I have graduated and live on Ghost Island, some magical transportation is needed to get to Hogsmeade Village, and then up the hill to the forest by the castle. Luckily for us here at Legion, there are no Muggle residents between the island and Hogsmeade Village, so flying on a broomstick to get home to see our families is completely reasonable! Plus, now that we’re older, the forest isn’t so forbidden anymore!

The owl we received this week was a fascinating one. Not only was its return ‘address’ the forest itself, but the creature who wrote it was… Not human. The letter read as follows:

Dearest esteemed investigators,

I hope that this letter finds you both well. We have heard of you from a friend of ours, Brianne Paige. She had visited us on one of her class assignments during her fifth year at Hogwarts, and she informed us that her brother, Max, was an Investigator now. She told us that you were training, but we have every faith that you will be able to help us solve this mystery.

We have located a very old well in one section of the forest. There are three stones surrounding the top of the well with some very strange markings on them. Your sister told us that you were quite adept in reading ancient runes, and were hoping that you could come translate these symbols for us.

The well is located just a few feet east of our camp. Please come as soon as you can. We would rather this be solved before someone else comes and takes the stones away.

From,
Roman. The Centaur Camp. Forbidden Forest.

We were both very intrigued by this, of course, and made our way into the forest. I was excited to be in the forest, without the fear of getting in trouble. We flew over to the forest and found the location of the mysterious well. Roman the Centaur was friendly and welcoming as he showed us around the Centaur Camp! Sure enough, Roman led us to the well and pointed to the rocks at the top of the well. There were five stones with strange carvings on them. I recognized them from my Ancient Runes class, specifically the Futhark runes. I took out my notebook and drew the symbols on the stones as best I could, and promised that I would get in touch with my old Ancient Runes professor, and then come back when we knew more.

Only time will tell what these runes say, and what kind of mystery it could lead to… I’m sure glad that I paid attention in Ancient Runes, and I hope that our esteemed professor will be able to help!

To be continued…
